Dominick Callahan
About Me.
Dominick was fortunate enough to be the son of a professional artist. He was raised to appreciate the arts in many forms, and saw that with hard work, making a living from creating art was a real possibility. He started painting miniatures (small scale models that are used for game pieces) around the age of ten, and has been painting ever since. Due to a series of unfortunate life events, he dropped out of High School when he was in his senior year, and started working. He held jobs in a multitude of industries throughout his twenties, such as the aftermarket automotive industry, a meat production facility, a dentist's office, and a variety of retail jobs. After some urging from his family and a lack of fulfillment with his career path, he decided to pursue a college education.
Unsure of what to study, his interest was piqued when he learned about Technical Theatre. You see, Dominick is a lover of all things "horror". A lifelong dream of his is to create and own multiple haunted houses, something that could really leave an impact on people. Technical Theatre was the obvious choice of study to learn more about the scenic, lighting, costume and even sound design that goes into these types of productions and immersive experiences.
He received his GED in the fall of 2020, and quickly fell in love with theatre. Professor, and dear friend, Maria Coon, gave him an opportunity to pursue scenic design for the first time in the fall of 2022 when he designed the haunt for Fresno City College's Festival of Fright. He quickly fell in love with creating worlds and environments for the audience to navigate, and decided to place his emphasis on scenic design.
He graduated from Fresno City College in the spring of 2023, and was awarded the Dean's Medallion. After his graduation, Maria Coon created the Spectral Raven Theatre Company, and offered the roles of Designer and Assistant Artistic Director to Dominick. He designed the haunt for their first original work Red Fiend that had a 9 show run in October of 2023. (They are currently building their second show, Balada de Muerte, and are aiming for a 2025 debut.)
Dominick transferred to Fresno State in the fall of 2023, and designed his first show for Fresno State, Spring Awakening, in the Spring of 2024. That fall he designed the set for Red Velvet, and in his final semester he will be designing the set of the play, Sins of Sor Juana. He has been nominated for the Dean's Medal award, once again, at Fresno State for his impressive body of work. After graduating, Dominick plans to pursue a graduate degree, and go on to teach at the college level. He also plans to continue designing for Spectral Raven Theatre Company, helping them soar to new heights professionally and artistically. The path to get to where he is today has been anything but easy, but he hopes that his story can be an inspiration to the youth of tomorrow. Dominick wants to his life to be an example and embodiment of the truth that, with hard work and determination, it's never too late to make your dreams a reality.
